The name Toluca comes from a hispanization of "Tollocan" which is a Náhuatl term meaning "Place of the God Tollotl". Until the year 1979, its Náhuatl symbol was utilised as the municipality symbol. Later its Coat of Arms was designed to replace the symbol in official documents.
