Hampers is the present participle of the verb 'to hamper'. It basically means to stop or slow down free movement or hinder progress of something. It means to chain something down, or to shackle something so as to cease movement. A hamper is basically something that obstructs or acts as a barrier in a passage. It is a kind of a barricade, impediment or hindrance that stops development.

A hamper also refers to an essential kind of equipment which is very cumbersome. A hamper also means a type of a big basket, which generally has a cover. It can be used in a physical as well as a psychological manner. For example, "his indifferent attitude is hampering his academic future", or "the sprain in his leg hampered his movement".
