The word extinction describes the situation in which something stops existing. And it can be anything whether a species of animal or a particular kind of plant or even a tribe. The following context can make you understand the concept well: Many of the indigenous tribes of the Andaman and Nicobar islands in India are on the verge of extinction. The sentence says that the population of the tribes is at the point from where it is very difficult to revive it.

These days the word is being used quite often because of our own uncontrolled behaviour. The population and also the way we are living our lives has put enormous pressure on the planet earth and there are many problems that are being created like global warming and a vast decline in the area of forest. Because of this, many of the species are facing the problem of being wiped out and making the newspapers use the term extinction.
