The term dissociation is defined as a separation or splitting off of two people, ideas, situations or objects at the psychological level. It is an intrapsychic process of defence. It usually operates automatically and unconsciously. The emotional significance and impact of dissociation are separated and detached from an idea, situation or object at a level that is easily understood only by psychologists.

Dissociation also means ionisation. It happens when a soluble ionic substance dissolves in water. It is the process in which a molecule is broken into two fragments. These fragments may either be smaller molecules, atoms, free radicals or ions. This happens when a chemical bond ruptures. The dissociation may occur via a process of heating (dissociation due to a thermal process) or following the absorption of a photon. When a photon is absorbed, the process is known as photo dissociation.

Dissociation involves making alterations or changes in one's identity. It involves identifying one's sense of self-worth.
