Conceit means to have excessive pride. Conceit also refers to having an excessively high opinion of one-self; especially in relation to conceit concerning ones own abilities. It is also sometimes used to refer to a witty turn of thoughts, a poetic image of fancy found in print, and some type of knickknack.

The word is from the Anglo-Norman word conceit which is a derivation of the Latin word "conceptus". To better understand what conceit in its original sense means a comparison can be drawn with these synonyms; egoism, egotism, narcissism, amour proper, self-love and vanity. There is also an element of pride that is seen in a conceited person and in certain cases can reveal an underlying bullying nature.

A person showing signs of conceit can sometimes display sentiments of egotism, boastfulness, vainglory, posturing and self-importance.
