The word chlorinated is simply used as an adjective to describe something that has been treated with chlorine. Chlorine is usually used as an cleansing agent for water and you can find its use in swimming pools where it is used to make the water clean. In a swimming pool chlorine is not usually used on itself but is used in conjugation with sodium and the mixture is collectively called sodium hypochloride.

Chlorine is a poisonous substance and it has the properties to remain in the water even after the treatment. Probably for this reason many of the municipal corporations use ozone for killing bacteria instead of chlorine.

There are some industrial uses also that can be attributed to chlorine; it can be used in paper products, in antiseptics, dyestuff, paints, plastics, textiles and many other products.
