The word census is used in two contexts. It can either be defined as a periodic count of the population or the act of conducting a census. A census is the process by which information about every member of a population can be collected. The population may not necessarily mean the human population.

The definition of word census is different from that of the word sampling. Sampling is defined as the collection of information only from a small part or selected subset of the population. Both methods, however, are related and are statistical terms. They are important factors that influence the voting pattern in a democratically-conducted election.

The term census is defined as the counting or listing of the inhabitants residing in a particular area, village, town, city, state, province or county, country or region. The census is usually conducted by a person called a census enumerator. It is done on a federal or state basis.
