Unlike English-speakers, Koreans have a number of ways to say "goodbye".

Here's a quick guide to the one's you'll want to learn:

  • 안녕히가세요 (anneyon gha-seyo) This is mostly said when someone is leaving your company.
  • 안녕히계세요 (annyeonghi gye-seyo) You can use this when you are the person leaving.
  • 또봐요 (toh-boayo) This is the equivalent of the English, "bye", and is relatively informal.
Actually, the following are also used in an informal context (between friends, or among people of the same age as you).

  • 안녕 (annyeong)
  • 또봐 (to boa)
The important thing to remember about the Korean language is politeness. It's considered offensive to address your elders with an informal greeting, so make sure you choose the right phrase next time you say goodbye!

It depends on the situation.  In general, though, these are the phrases to use:

For friends:

안녕(ahn-young)  or simply "'Bye" will suffice.

For others:

안녕히게세요 (ahn-young hee gae-sae yo) if you are leaving, and they are staying.
안녕히가세요 (ahn-young hee gah-sae yo) if you're staying, and they're leaving.
