Interjection, in grammar, is its own lexical category that is used by people to be able to express one isolated emotion, or a sentiment. Most interjections do in fact have clear definitions, but some of them don't have any particular definition - people just generally assume they know what it means.

Sometimes pauses in language are filled by things like 'um', 'uh', 'er and more. This happens in all languages across the world and are considered as interjections. This is just one kind of interjection. This particular kind are often placed at the beginning of a sentence, though sometimes they are placed in the middle of a sentence when the person can't think of what they need to say.

Interjections are sometimes expressed as one singular word, or non-sentence phrase. These are usually followed by some kind of punctuation mark. The isolated use of an interjection will not represent a complete sentence in normal English writing. Hence, in formal writing the interjection will instead be incorporated into a much larger sentence clause, for the sake of the rules of the language. Interjections are very much associated with colloquial language.

Conventions like 'Hi' and 'Bye' are actually interjections, and so are exclamations like 'Hoorah!' and 'Cheers!'

Interjections, just like nouns and pronouns, can often be characterized through the use of exclamation marks. This is of course depending of either the force or altitude of the emotion that is being expressed with the interjection.
