It is a baby boy name and its origin is Spanish. It means 'Respelling of Marquis; noble rank'. It is basically derived from Marcos.

My last name is Marquez- from what family historians have told me- it is actually not Spanish...it is Basque. The basque people live in the Pyrenees mountain region that borders France and Spain. So there are Basque's on the France side and there are Basque's on the Spanish side of the country too. They are neither French nor Spaniards-they are their own race and are believed to be one of the earliest races in that part of Europe. They have their own language-Euskara. Most languages are derived from Latin or Celtic roots-Euskara has no other origin-it is a very ancient language. Basque people were originally pagans-Spaniards forced them into Catholicism. They were mostly sheep and goat herders. I was told by a great-uncle that the Marquez ancestors were guards for the king of Spain. Most Marquez's (including me) are very fair with blue or green eyes. The name is also thought to originally be spelled Marquis, but the dialect was changed in Spain. They were also great seafarers and went on missions for the king-this lead to many people in the Philippines and Mexico, Columbia to have this last name-the men landed there and started families, therefore passing on the last name. Here is a website URL were you can view the family crest and much more info.
