More or less, yes. We tend to say things like "I've got a surprise in store for you." Sometimes we do use it to refer to things that just happen without human planning - eg "Let's look at the forecast and see what the weather has in store for us" - but then it is used a bit ironically, as if the weather were doing something on purpose. So yes, you are right.
