A photo caption is the description that appears with a photograph - a caption may describe the place shown in the photograph, or the person (or people) in the picture. A photo caption can also be an amusing little comment about what is happening in a certain photographs. Captions provide a great way to categorize and classify photos - they also add a personal touch to photos that are posted on the Internet.

Where To Find Photo Captions

  • Captions may appear in scrapbooks, where people paste in photographs about family events, vacations, or weddings (among many other types of scrapbook subject matter). For example, if a group of friends attended a U2 concert that was a big local event, a scrapbook page might be dedicated to pictures from the concert, or pictures of the trip to and from the big live performance. A photo of the stage might have the photo caption, 'U2 stage set' or something similar to that. Pictures of an after-party, held directly after the U2 concert, might feature captions, such as 'U2 after party!' or something of that nature. Captions can be factual or creative; what a person writes under a photo is really a personal thing, unless a photo is being used for business purposes.
  • Business websites will have photos of their inventory, which may be sold online, or through their bricks-and-mortar retail outlets. Since potential customers, or returning customers, must find items easily in website searches, the captions on photos will usually accurately describe the product name, without any added editorializing or creativity. In most cases, photo captions will be accompanied by Wordpress 'alt tags' that help search engine 'bots' find the items.
Photo captions serve many purposes, but they will almost always be brief and explanatory. In general, a caption that is a sentence long will be ideal, since photo captions aren't designed to hold a lot of wordy commentaries.
