My last name is Meraz too. My grandparents were born in Mexico, but neither was Mexican by blood. Their parents (my great grandparents)were immigrants from Spain & France. So it's been my understanding that the name originated from Spain.

It is a Jewish name, possibly from the Ukraine, eventually settling in Spain, and because of the Spanish Inquision, leaving Spain for Mexico.
